Earlier this week, the Center for Jewish Life postponed a campus presentation by Israel's Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely on extremely short notice. The decision, made by Executive Director Rabbi Julie Roth in consultation with Mark Biderman ’67, chair of the CJL Board of Directors, was a mistake. Rabbi Roth and Hillel International President and CEO Eric Fingerhut have publicly apologized, and Rabbi Roth has reached out directly to MK Hotovely and to Israeli Consul General Dani Dayan to offer her personal apologies. We, the Board of Directors of the CJL, would like to publicly express our deep regret to MK Hotovely.
We are pleased MK Hotovely's presentation did take place on campus Monday, and Rabbi Roth both attended her presentation and encouraged students to do so as well.
The CJL has been and will remain a place that welcomes and respects Israeli government officials. We will continue to ensure that the State of Israel maintains its vital and cherished place within our CJL community and to hear diverse perspectives from across the Israeli political spectrum.
We will be working on policies and procedures to help ensure that this week’s mistake is not repeated. These events do not and should not overshadow Rabbi Roth's achievements in leading the Princeton CJL over many years. We have every confidence in her ability to continue to lead the CJL with distinction.
